Flotsam and jetsam

The above pictures were taken at about 3pm today, the one directly above is of the Derwent, as it leaves Cockermouth, taken from the road bridge which is now closed as are nearly all bridges over the Derwent tonight.
.
The top two pictures are of the the volume of water still flowing right through the town.
.
The reaction from the emergency services and the people affected by this disaster has been humbling to witness. I have had phone calls and text messages and emails from all over the country with people offering to come up to Cumbria and help out, the British people are always at their best in a crisis. The real worthy assistance from outside volunteers will be needed in the coming days and weeks when the clean up can start.

A long night ahead.

What an incredible scene, life boats struggling to cross Cockermouth Main Street! The water is still rising and it is a tidal river with high tide due in about an hour.
.
Our town will be a long time recovering from this disaster.

A bad day and worse night for Cockermouth.

All political news and debate is suspended tonight as we struggle to cope in Cockermouth. High drama and possible disaster as unconfirmed reports reach us of a young child washed away in the floods. I dearly hope this turns out to be a mistake.
.
Search and rescue helicopters hover overhead right now as three coastguard sea kings are flown in in a bid to evacuate 200 from the danger zone.
.
The last time I was any where near the main street the river was rising over the bridge, windows in shops on the main street are smashing with the weight of water. This sleepy lake district town is a disaster zone tonight. Cockermouth school has been closed and is being used to house those evacuated. I am off out again now to see if I can be of some help.

So ........

It has been an incredibly hectic schedule and today is the first time I have had to update my blog since last Thursday.
.
First the Glasgow North East by-election: a close run affair with us missing our 5% and the deposit saved by ....................... 13 votes! Agonising.
.
The next threshold we really wanted to cross to make this result a national news event was to come third, we missed beating the Tories into third place by 62 votes.
.
But although that was our ultimate target, the best case scenario so to speak, the actual result 4.95% and fourth place out of 13 candidates was still a great result and the best ever result in Scotland for us in a Parliamentary seat.
.
In the June elections we were in 6th place in Glasgow NE and we have jumped over the Greens and the Lib/ Dems into 4th place. The same seat is up again in the coming general election where the 5% barrier will be the target, we should be easily on track for that which will lead to us being in the strongest of positions in 2011 for the Scottish Parliament elections and taking the last seat in Glasgow from the Greens, who currently hold the last seat with 5.3%.
.
So in summary we would have loved to take third place but 4.95% and fourth will do nicely.

More press from Glasgow.....

Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the SNP have urged voters yesterday in Glasgow North East not to vote for the British National Party in Thursday’s by-election.
.
Their decision to join forces rather than ignore the BNP campaign, is evidence of mounting concern about the far-right party in a country where its impact has hitherto been negligible.
On the day the BNP leader Nick Griffin made his second visit to the constituency, Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, and Nick Clegg, the Lib Dem leader, attacked the BNP’s “nasty message of hate” as irrelevant to the concerns and aspirations of voters. The SNP also issued a statement saying it was “vital” that the BNP was rejected.
.
The mainstream politicians were commenting on the BNP as the final days of campaigning got underway amid growing fears that the BNP candidate Charlie Baillie may succeed on Thursday in saving the party’s deposit for the first time in an election in Scotland.
.
What would have added to the concern yesterday was the reception that Mr Griffin got during his brief visit. There was little sign of hostility, and some passers-by even voiced their support for the BNP.
.
The BNP leader, surrounded by a group of minders, predicted during a campaign visit to Duke Street, one of the constituency’s main thoroughfares, that his party would certainly save its deposit and even stood a chance of winning third place ahead of both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats in the by-election.
.
During his campaigning trip, Mr Griffin was greeted by some drivers sounding their horns while others shouted words of encouragement and one even got out of his vehicle to shake the hand of the BNP leader.
.
Mr Griffin told reporters: “We are going to do very well ... we are getting a tremendous response. We are in with a serious chance of third place.
.
“The performance which will send a message to the Government to take people’s concern about asylum dumping seriously is for us to beat the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, or both,” he said.
.
Mr Darling, who was also campaigning in Glasgow North East yesterday, said voters should be under no illusion as to how “unpleasant and nasty” the BNP was.
.
Mr Darling said: “I think their policies are deeply unpleasant and I hope people will reject them.”
He was immediately backed by Mr Clegg, also in the constituency, who told The Times: “My message to voters here is simple. How are these people who peddle hate going to help? Hate does not create jobs or build affordable homes. Hate does not help a child to have a better school or make taxes fairer. The BNP is utterly vile.”
.
In its statement, the SNP said: “The BNP do not have a single councillor or any other elected representative in the whole of Scotland and they have never saved their deposit in any election.
“BNP membership figures shows them to be virtually invisible in Scotland. They have nothing to offer but hate and prejudice, and it is vital that they are similarly rejected in Glasgow North East — and therefore essential that they are not talked up. That is one reason why the BBC’s decision to invite Nick Griffin onto Question Time was so irresponsible and wrong.”
.
Although Scotland has not had a significant problem with issues of race and immigration in the past, Glasgow North East has one of the highest percentages of asylum-seekers in the country. The BNP has targeted the asylum issue with a campaign pledge to end “mass immigration”.
.
In the European elections in June the BNP won 545 votes in Glasgow North East — 4.4 per cent of the overall vote on a 21.5 per cent turn out. To save its deposit on Thursday, the BNP needs to achieve 5 per cent. If the turn-out in Glasgow North East is around the predicted 30 per cent, the BNP would require only around 900 votes to reach that target.
.
The main parties believe that the BNP’s profile in Scotland was boosted by the appearance of Nick Griffin, its leader, on BBC television’s Question Time last month. They also say that the BNP is feeding off voter antipathy created by the MPs expenses scandal.

The new Glasgow North East leaflet.

.
We have timed this election well. The publicity and intensity we have built in this campaign is building perfectly and would you believe the 40,000 full colour, main election addresses, that the GPO deliver in Parliamentary elections have been timed to go out in the last four days of the election and have just started dropping on peoples mats TODAY! They will all be out by Wednesday and what an impact that will make.
.
Add to that the huge publicity generated today by our high profile campaigning, due to hit the newspapers tomorrow, again timed to start peaking our campaign. We also have another 5,000 of the new leaflets, pictured above, going out now along with another 5,000 VoF newspapers and multiple thousand full colour magazines.
.
We are also diverting more manpower into this by-election and experienced teams from the North West and North East are going up tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.
.
It is all set for a most interesting parliamentary by-election.
.
ALL ACTIVISTS - GET TO GLASGOW.

Fears BNP could come third in Glasgow North East byelection. Nick Griffin gets friendly reception from some shoppers in swift tour of constituency

Nick Griffin meets a member of the public on the campaign trail in Glasgow North East on 9 November 2009.
.
I was in Glasgow this morning with Nick Griffin, Richard Barnbrook, Eddy Butler, Charlie Baillie and his team, the Truth Truck, tannoys, activists: about forty of us, new leaflets and what an incredible response!!!! It was, without question or exaggeration, one of the best public responses I have ever witnessed and the press (about two dozen of them!) literally couldn't believe what they were witnessing! The first of many reports was already out by the time I got home, it is below.....enjoy!!!!
.
Alan Johnson called for a debate on immigration aimed at the "moderate majority" today after the British National party forced itself on to the agenda in the Glasgow North East byelection.
.
The home secretary said discussing immigration policy should not be "shied away from" as the BNP's leader, Nick Griffin, made his first visit of the byelection campaign, getting a friendly reception from some voters on a swift tour of three shopping areas.
.
Johnson, who was out campaigning elsewhere in Glasgow North East, said mainstream politicians were too nervous about debating rates of immigration because of a false belief that there were only two options: an open door or a closed door. That allowed the BNP to exploit this territory.
.
"It would help counter the BNP threat if we had the debate the moderate majority of people in this country want to see around those issues, and we did no shy away from it because we were concerned of it leading to the extreme right," the home secretary said.
.
Anxieties are intensifying that the BNP might come third on Thursday and, for the first time in a Scottish election, save its deposit. Griffin's party had its best showing in the European elections of all Scottish constituencies in Glasgow North East, polling 4%, but it took only 920 votes in 2005, coming sixth behind the Scottish Unionist party.
.
After failing to turn up last month after angry protests by anti-Nazi campaigners, Griffin met local voters and shoppers today, some of whom shook his hand and confirmed they would be voting BNP. Some passing vehicles tooted their horns, but he was heckled by three young people who shouted: "Nazi scum off our streets."
.
Competition from eastern Europeans for jobs and a high number of asylum seekers being placed in the Sighthill flats in Springburn are two issues that have been raised by some voters on doorsteps. SNP canvassers have reported finding BNP voters in some parts of the constituency for the first time. However, other experienced campaigners believe many are unlikely to bother voting.
.
Griffin claims his treatment on BBC1's Question Time last month boosted his party's popularity, and said today that his party were "in with a serious chance of third place" on Thursday. He claimed he had had a better response in Glasgow than in many parts of England.
.
"The performance which will send a message to the government to take people's concern about asylum dumping seriously is for us to beat the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, or both," he said.
.
Johnson doubted whether the BNP would make inroads in Scotland but said the moderate majority had legitimate fears about the impact of migration. While most saw the economic case for immigration, "they want to see migration controlled, and they want to ensure those people who do stay here pay their taxes, obey the law, and speak English," he said.
.
"If we can frame a debate around that, and the effects that an influx of immigrants can have on public services in certain areas of the country, which is a perfectly legitimate argument, then we ensure the debate is framed around what the moderate majority wants to see."
.
The chancellor, Alistair Darling, who was also campaigning in the seat today, was more direct in opposing the BNP. "People should be under no illusion as to how unpleasant and nasty the BNP is. I think their policies are deeply unpleasant and I hope people will reject them," he said.
.
Labour's confidence that it will retain the seat, held by the former Commons Speaker, Michael Martin, with a 10,134-vote majority over the SNP, was boosted after a TNS-BMRB opinion poll showed support for Labour in a Westminster election had grown in Scotland. The poll, of 983 voters in face-to-face interviews, gave Labour a 14-point lead over the SNP, at 39% to 25%, 10 points more than in May.
.
Labour, which has a strong database of local voters and has been mobilising its supporters, is expected to do well from postal votes. Labour and SNP officials admit, however, that the turnout on Thursday will play a major part in deciding this byelection. Many expect a lower-than-normal turnout, with the expected poor weather on Thursday likely to be a factor.
.
Polling expert John Curtice of Strathclyde University visited the area today and said he expected turnout to be around 35%. "This campaign really hasn't taken off but obviously the Labour party are reasonably well organised, so are confident about getting their people out," he said.
.
"The impression I got from people I spoke to was that, although they clearly expect the BNP to register something, it wasn't quite clear that their perceived strength was quite of the order that some people had tried to say last week."

BNP set to advance in ex-Speaker Martin's Glasgow seat

The battle for the parliamentary seat vacated by former House of Commons speaker Michael Martin could hand the British National Party its first major breakthrough in Scotland, it was claimed yesterday.
.
Senior politicians from all the main parties have conceded that the BNP could make the significant advance of saving its deposit in the Glasgow North East by-election, on Thursday.
However, Labour Party officials campaigning in the constituency warned yesterday that the BNP could even come third, as part of a "protest vote" against the number of asylum-seekers living in the area.
.
Although Scotland has not had a significant problem with issues of race and immigration in the past, Glasgow North East has one of the highest percentages of asylum-seekers in the country. The BNP has targeted the asylum issue with a campaign pledge to end "mass immigration".
.
"We say, 'No to mass immigration and bogus asylum-seeking. Yes to repatriation of bogus asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants'," the party's campaign literature said. "We are unique in campaigning for these policies. All the other major parties, and especially the SNP and the Labour Party want to promote mass immigration and bogus asylum-seeking into Scotland, and into Glasgow in particular."
.
A senior national Labour official said the impact of the BNP message could not be ignored. He said: "We have been comforted by the strong showing for Labour on the doorsteps of the constituency. But there is a significant minority who are clearly considering voting for the BNP and these should not be overlooked. The BNP message is hateful and it is full of holes, but every other party should be prepared to take them on and argue against it; otherwise they will have a propaganda coup."
.
Elections expert Professor John Curtice of Strathclyde University said the constituency represented fertile ground for the BNP in Scotland. He added: "The social profile in Glasgow North East means it is the kind of area where the BNP tends to do well throughout the UK. But you do not expect them to do as well in Scotland as they would do in the same social situation down south."
.
The BNP question has deflected attention from a relatively successful Labour campaign in the constituency, compared with the disastrous loss of Glasgow East to the Scottish National Party last year. Labour followed the SNP's example from last year by selecting a popular local man – law lecturer Willie Bain – to fight the seat.
.
But SNP candidate David Kerr has struggled to make headway during the campaign, and the seat is expected to stay in Labour's hands. The SNP has also suffered from the downturn in the popularity of leader Alex Salmond's administration in the Scottish Parliament. A poll last week suggested Labour would win more seats in the parliament if a Holyrood election were held today.

Glasgow ........and the BNP.

If you click on the the link below and move the film right across to the end it will move to the second half of the news which features the Glasgow North East by-election.

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1529573111

I have been involved in this campaign and have been up there several times and will be there again before polling day next Thursday. The above news item is comical with the SNP having to hurriedly cross the road to avoid Charlie and his team, who have had a very visible street presence during this campaign, and he then goes on and tells Channel 4 News "they are the forces of darkness" which is most amusing to us, tragic for him uttering such dross on national TV.

Are the other parties talking up our chances? I don't think they are, we will do well in this election, third place is a big ask and I would say its not probable but is certainly possible. To beat one of the main parties is defiantly on, to beat two would be an astonishing result.

So anyone reading this and wanting to take part in the final push, give me a ring, we will be going up and supporting our colleagues.

Fears BNP could come third in Glasgow North East.....

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/scotland/article6905279.ece

Mainstream parties say that Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time has raised the BNP's profile.
.
The mainstream political parties are increasingly worried that British National Party could achieve a political breakthrough in Scotland in next week’s byelection.
.
Some privately believe that the BNP stands a chance of winning third place in Glasgow North East, ahead of the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, or, at best, save its deposit — something the party has never achieved in an election in Scotland.
.
In the European elections in June the BNP won 545 votes in Glasgow North East — 4.4 per cent of the overall vote on a 21.5 per cent turn out. To save its deposit on Thursday, the BNP needs to achieve 5 per cent. If the turn-out in Glasgow North East is around the predicted 40 per cent, the BNP would require only 1,200 votes to reach that target.
.
The main parties believe that the BNP’s campaign was boosted by the appearance of Nick Griffin, the BNP’s leader, on Question Time last month. They also say that the BNP is feeding off voter antipathy created by the MPs expenses scandal
.
Allied to that, Glasgow North East is the only Scottish constituency with a relatively high number of asylum seekers. Ten years ago the city decided to take part in the Home Office’s asylum seeker dispersal programme and many of the several thousand asylum seekers who were sent to Glasgow ended up in the constituency’s notorious Red Road towers.
.
Asylum seekers say they regularly face accusations that they are given preferential treatment over local families when it comes to housing allocations.
.
Labour MPs out canvassing in the constituency say that they have come across growing support for the BNP among voters.
.
“It’s not just in these places where you would expect it but among some of the better-off people as well. I’m worried that the BNP could cause a real shock here,” said one.
.
Another was concerned that the BNP could achieve 10 per cent of the vote, although his colleagues disputed that support was as high as that.
.
Professor John Curtice, Britain’s most respected polling analyst, said: “You would have to say that this is potentially the best place in Scotland for the BNP.
.
“The social profile in Glasgow North East means it is the kind of area where the BNP tend to do well throughout the UK. But you do not expect them to do as well in Scotland as they would do in the same social situation down south.”
.
He said that the chances of the BNP coming third were slim. For it to do so would mean that support for parties other than Labour and the SNP had totally collapsed.
.
The BNP candidate in the byelection is Charlie Baillie, a long-time member of the party. “The message is that the BNP is opposed to the dispersal policy enacted by the city council. We are opposed to mass immigration and we seek an immediate return for bogus asylum seekers,” he said.
.
With the byelection campaign now in its final lap, the Labour candidate, Willie Bain, appears increasingly confident of holding off a strong challenge from the SNP and avoiding a repeat of Glasgow East byelection last year, when the SNP overcame a 13,000 Labour majority.
.
Political observers say that the SNP campaign has failed to develop any real momentum.
Labour has made great play of the SNP government’s recent decision to cancel a rail link project from Glasgow to the city’s airport. The SNP has tried to hit back by reminding voters that they have been electing Labour representatives at all levels of government for the past 74 years but that the constituency still remains one of the poorest in the UK.
.
The byelection was triggered by the decision of the former Commons speaker, Michael Martin, now Lord Martin of Springburn, to stand down in June as the MP for Glasgow North East in the wake of the expenses scandal.
.
Both the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, which will also be fighting to save their deposits, did not contest the seat at the General Election in 2005, observing the Westminster tradition that the Speaker is not opposed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My information to date, which includes a very good estimate of the votes already cast via the postal votes, is that third place and a stunning shocker is ...........possible, very possible!

The Sellafield fiasco.

Click on the link to view: http://www.itv.com/border/
.
The above picture is taken from the Whitehaven News site and is a picture of Nick Griffin MEP outside the the Civic Centre in Whitehaven on the day of this years county council and European election count.
.
As discussed at length on this blog Copeland played a vital part in the election of Nick to the European parliament polling the third highest BNP vote in the whole of the North West and Nick was a regular visitor on the Copeland campaign trail with us. The point I am making here is that 1 in 5 of the employees of Sellafield voted BNP so it is not surprising there is real anger on site that the elected MEP for the NW they voted into office has been prevented, for now at least, from entering the site.
.
I actually made the arrangements for the site inspection and all was in order, until at the 12 hour, weeks after the visit had been agreed and arranged, I received a phone call from on of the "stake holders" informing me that they had decided to block the visit. Let me be very clear about this, the security clearances were all done without a problem and no concerns were raised by those securing the site. So this decision is political, simple as that.
.
The issue here is very simple: the unions and the government either accept democracy or they don't! Nick Griffin is either an elected MEP or he isn't, there can be no possible in between stance with this most basic principle. We are coming across this type of interference in other areas and it is making for an interesting case that the European parliament will soon have to deal with at the highest level.

Glasgow North East by-election is all about 2011.

Glasgow North East vote at the European elections June this year:

Labour Party------------------------------ 5,244
SNP ----------------------------------------3,177
Green Party --------------------------------- 822
United Kingdom Independence Party -------- 618
Conservative and Unionist --------------------561
British National Party -------------------- 545
Liberal Democrats ---------------------------- 533
Socialist Labour Party -------------------------446
Scottish Socialist Party ----------------------- 287
Scottish Christian Party -----------------------179
Independent ----------------------------------- 67
Jury Team ------------------------------------- 47
I was quite shocked when I logged on to my blog and realised it has been a full week since I last posted, and what a week it has been for the British National Party!
.
Let me see last Thursday was Question Time, Friday was just hectic with media and phone calls, Saturday and Sunday the Trafalgar Club, Monday was a long day of office work and Tuesday/ Wednesday I was in Glasgow, then Blackburn and finally St Helens with the Chairman getting home about 3am Thursday morning. And of course back into the office far earlier than I would have liked.
.
The trip to Scotland was very interesting starting with meeting the Chairman at Glasgow airport and going straight to a fund raising meeting in a fantastic hotel in the centre of the city. The meeting was very well attended and raised about £1,000 for the Glasgow North East by-election. One or two of the better journalists were invited and did extensive interviews with the Chairman and he confirmed the main reason we were fighting Glasgow North East was of course the Scottish parliament elections in 2011.
.
I have mentioned this before on here that voting patterns and changing the voting patterns is the key long term aim and is systematic job of work. Standing in election after election and working hard enough to sustain and increase your vote is vital as people need to see BNP on the ballot paper every time they go to vote. To take a seat in the Scottish Parliament we will need about 5.5% of the vote in Glasgow and the European elections have given us the best indicator yet that we are bang on target to make the Scottish break through in 2011.
.
So we launched the campaign and thought that was to be the big event of the trip but the following day a phone in session at a local radio station, helped along by some hysterical "protesters" generated a media frenzy that was quite unexpected and as you can see by the photo's about two dozen paparazzi descended on the headquarters of FEBA, the veterans charity, to interview Nick Griffin MEP and Charlie Baillie our Glasgow North East candidate.
.
Incredible media attention and a most interesting by-election as UKIP failed to stand a candidate and our campaign is starting to build momentum. It would be a fantastic achievement to save our deposit for the first time in Scotland but that is a big task and as yet I would say we will fall short of the 5% but who knows, this election has the potential to capture the attention of the people in the constituency....... so watch this space!

There might well be a media storm of incredible ferocity surrounding us this week, with an incredible 4 out of the 6 Sky News screens running BNP stories (and one of the remaining two was the weather!) but the steady work of expansion and electioneering carries on.

We have the Cleveleys by-election on Thursday with our excellent candidate James Clayton standing in a very difficult ward, but as ever the Blackpool Branch have conducted a solid campaign, learning with each election.

We have Tony Ward and the Liverpool team just starting their campaign in Knowsley in a by-election we have forced in a very promising ward.

And last on today's list we have the Glasgow North East by election. The video above is self explanatory and much more to come from that election as things gather pace.

URGENT UPDATE: ALLEGED BNP MEMBERSHIP LIST IS A MALICIOUS FORGERY

URGENT UPDATE: NEW BNP MEMBERSHIP LIST IS A MALICIOUS FORGERY

Fellow Patriot,

The so-called "new BNP membership list" published today on the Internet is a malicious forgery.
We have had a chance to examine the list in detail and can unequivocally say that it is not a genuine BNP list.

It is a concoction of the 'old' list plus a number of inquiries received, but, most disturbingly, it contains thousands of names of people with whom the BNP has had no contact whatsoever.
The list includes thousands of people with renewal and membership numbers next to their names which are totally false and made up.

We have no idea from where this information has been drawn. Some of it looks like random items drawn from a telephone book. Some parts of the list looked like information which was taken from the home of an ex-BNP employee by police during an earlier investigation.

The Party had been the subject of extensive attacks by the state during the entire European election period. Over that time, twenty sacks of mail disappeared in the post, and were only delivered six weeks after the election date after we threatened to call in the police.

The high degree of fraud used in compiling the list was a serious criminal offence. In the interests of the totally unconnected people named in this list, we will not be confirming or denying any details contained in this new attempt to subvert the BNP.

The media in particular deserve criticism their blatant sensationalism concerning the publication of this new 'list'.

Government departments, including the Ministry of Defence, have time and time again lost sensitive data on laptops left in trains, or have thrown lists into skips for cleaners to find. Recently, the entire Royal Air Force payroll was up for grabs on the Internet.

These events are sidelined with a cursory reference in the media. Yet, when we, as a legal political party have our data stolen, the media makes a circus of it. It is hypocritical in the extreme.

Ordinary members and Party Officers are instructed not to speak to the media except with prior authorisation from either the National Press Officer or the Deputy Press Officer.

More updates in due course.

Yours sincerely,
Nick Griffin
MEP, BNP Chairman.

And today we face attack by ....the Army!

Some political puppets who used to be in the Army and some of whom are now employed by the Conservative Party are spearheading another political attack.

What I find incredible about this latest attack is that we are told that the British National Party should not use images or presumably our core political policies of none interference in foreign wars that have nothing to do with us, in our political campaigns. The stunning hypocrisy that most have so far missed is that we are being told this by civilians who are using their former military rank and pictures of themselves in uniform .....to tell a political party it is wrong to use military imagery and topics politically! Yet their campaign is exactly that is it not!

The simple facts are that we do support our troops, we care about our troops and our membership lists are full of current and ex service personnel. Our policy of an immediate withdrawal from Afghanistan and Iraq are very real and very much supported by the public, we campaign and win elections because of our stance on these and other vital issues.

We will continue to campaign on these issues and the sooner we get into a position to help our troops the better.

The story has gone viral and my search engines are putting up page after page of this story and the overwhelming reaction so far has been in support of our position. Another own goal and incredible hypocrisy by a increasingly frantic establishment.

Below are the current Sky News stories:

You know what ..........

Having spent all day dealing with a string of puerile bureaucrats attempting to block our MEP from discharging his duty to those that elected him, fielded some rather impatient responses from people who should know better, slaved through the frustrations of an intermittent broad band hub, I get home late to find the next drama.

And you know what, it has had no other effect on me than to clarify one thing .............. the absolute fact that I can easily absorb and indeed will relish the coming years of opposition to our irresistible progress. Bring it on I say.

A word from Martin Wingfield on the current situation we face:

Stand firm and stick together.

Ten past eleven and it has been manic at home this evening.

Around eight o'clock we found out that another stolen membership list is due to be posted on the internet.

Quite how this list has come to be in the public domain is still being investigated, but I know the leak certainly didn't come from our end here.

According to a report that has just been posted on The Guardian website, the list appears to date back to April and is described as a snapshot of our 11,500 members at that time.

The Wigton office fielded all the furor that came about from the last membership list leak so I know, first hand, the concern that such publicity will bring to our members.

I urge everyone to see this attack on us as just another desperate effort to hurt us from an establishment that is living in fear of our growing support within the ranks of a disillusioned public.

We must stick together and stand firm in the face of this barrage.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will just point out that no list is in the public domain, it is just alleged that it is going to be. We will know by morning one way or another so I think it will be a long night and possibly a busier than anticipated day tomorrow. More as it happens.

A superb first meeting of the new Wyre group of the BNP.

Clive Jefferson, North West regional Organiser and James Clayton, West Lancs and Blackpool organiser, address a capacity meeting.
.
A week of high drama, controversy and protest ended last night with an absolutely superb capacity meeting of the newly formed Wyre BNP group in the council-owned, Frank Townend Community Centre last night.
.
This has been big news for two weeks now, ever since James Clayton, BNP candidate in a by-election currently being fought in Cleveleys, booked the community centre in the middle of the ward for a meeting.
.
What followed, as you can no doubt guess, was hysteria and undemocratic pressure from the Labour group, backed by the usual suspects in the communist UAF and Searchlight organisations, to try and stop the meeting.
.
But, as we are seeing more and more now, the council stood firm and Wyre Council insisted the BNP has to be treated like any other political party before the Jubilee Ward by-election on October 22.
.
Wyre chief executive Jim Corry said: "The BNP are a formally recognised political party and I am not going to make any distinction between them and any other political party when it comes to booking council facilities. I do not agree this will be viewed as the council giving tacit support to one particular organisation, not least as UKIP has booked the same venue on another occasion."
.
Clive Jefferson, North West regional Organiser, who addressed the capacity meeting last night paid tribute to Chief Executive Jim Corry and said "more and more in the North West now we are attaining a level of respect and acceptance from official bodies, it is long over due and is clearly the only way for local authorities to behave, after all within a few years we will have elected officials on most if not all of the local councils in the North West".
.
Left wing Labour party lap dogs (UAF) did turn up and mount a brief demonstration but that did not deter upwards of 80 people turning up to the meeting.
.
James Clayton, event organiser, said "The meeting has been a total success. We booked a room with a capacity of 40 and luckily the council staff were able to remove a partition doubling the room size which also was soon full to capacity and we had to turn some people away. The meeting was one of the best I have ever attended and we sold 300 VoF newspapers and 2,000+ leaflets were also taken by local residents to distribute and just to end the night perfectly 9 first time attendees actually joined up and paid their membership fee on the night in front of a stunned local reporter we allowed in to hear Clive Jefferson speak. There was not one bit of trouble, inside or outside and we left on great terms with everyone, including the council!"

"BNP has right to hold its rally here"

Another correct decision where authority and the British National Party are concerned.
Its getting to be a regular thing!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A BRITISH National Party rally is to be held in Cleveleys.
Wyre's Labour Group has objected to the meeting, which will be held at the council-owned Frank Townend Centre on Beach Road at 7pm on Tuesday.Nick Griffin, leader of the BNP, could be a speaker and the Labour group is worried there will be demonstrations.

It has called for council bosses to step in and refuse permission for the rally – but Wyre Council has insisted the BNP has to be treated like any other political party before the Jubilee Ward by-election on October 22.

Labour group leader Coun Clive Grunshaw said:

"Council premises should not be used in such a way during the middle of the Jubilee ward by-election. The Frank Townend Centre is in fact the site of the polling station for the by-election and giving permission for its use for political purposes at this time is clearly not appropriate. The fact is that Wyre Council is under no obligation to allow a political rally of this kind to take place on their premises. A rally by the BNP – which we believe to be addressed by Nick Griffin – will incite the inevitable demonstrations."

The Labour group also says it has concerns the community centre is in a densely populated area. But Wyre chief executive Jim Corry said:

"The BNP are a formally recognised political party and I am not going to make any distinction between them and any other political party when it comes to booking council facilities.

"I do not agree this will be viewed as the council giving tacit support to one particular organisation, not least as UKIP has booked the same venue on another occasion."

And the BNP branded the Labour group "undemocratic" by asking for the rally to be scrapped.

BNP spokesman John Walker said:

"The BNP is a mainstream political party, especially now in the North West we have a member of the European parliament. For the Labour group to ask for this meeting, which is a normal political meeting, to be banned is anti-democratic in the extreme."

Candidates for the by-election are James Clayton (BNP), Roy Hopwood (UKIP), Wayne Martin (Labour) and David Walmsley (Conservative).

Man cautioned after throwing pint over BNP leader.

Interesting conclusion to the incident at the Falcon Inn:

A TEENAGER who hurled a pint of Guinness over British National Party leader Nick Griffin has been cautioned by police.
.
The 18-year-old Stroud man admitted common assault against Mr Griffin (pictured) and claimed it was a political protest.
.
The incident on July 11 caused a storm which made it all the way from the Falcon Inn in Painswick to the House of Commons, with allegations and counter-allegations made in the aftermath.
.
The teenager, known as "Ben", admitted common assault after Mr Griffin made a complaint to Gloucestershire Constabulary on July 23.
.
Speaking at the time, he said he caught a taxi to the village to confront Mr Griffin and left the pub voluntarily after he was sworn at by some of those present.
.
When Mr Griffin left, the teenager threw the contents of a pint of Guinness over him - although not the glass.
.
He said he was then asked to leave the Falcon before being spat on in the street and verbally abused by people outside.
.
After the incident hit the headlines, Stroud Labour MP David Drew raised the matter in the House of Commons, describing Ben as "totally upstanding" and said he was "given one hell of a hiding" after the incident.
.
Mr Drew said he was not prepared to see the BNP in his constituency.
Then Mr Griffin made a complaint to the police.
.
A Gloucestershire police spokeswoman said the 18-year-old attended Stroud police station and voluntarily admitted common assault on a 50-year-old man after the incident.
She added he was given a caution.
.
BNP spokesman John Walker said objections to his party should come through the ballot box and not violence.
.
"It goes to show that people cannot go around taking liberties with elected members of the European Parliament," he said.
.
"It's an unfortunate incident and the young man should have known better.
.
"If he does not like the BNP there are plenty of other parties he can vote for."

As predictions go ........

Telling outside the polling station on Thursday morning.
.
.........yes as predictions go this is about as near as you will get:
Lib Dem - 387
Con - 157
BNP - 102 - 13.7 %
Ind - 58
Lab - 26
Grn - 18
Yes exactly as predicted and 4 times, yes four times the Labour result, ouch that must hurt! In fact we polled the same as the Independent, Labour and the Greens all added together.
.
A very good result for us in a hard fight with the Lib Dems and Conservatives really going for it and a vicious smear campaign against us by "third parties" and with the Conservatives in their conference week .... oh dear, and they expected to win!.
.
Good night for us and the Lib Dems, disastrous for the rest ...... and Labour 26. Lets just say that again: Labour 26!
.
Good night, off to carry on campaigning in Barnsley tomorrow, there really is "no rest for the wicked"!

Penrith West.

Thursday 8th October is an interesting day. The voters go to the poll in the Penrith West by-election and we intend to buck recent trends in the North West where our vote has suffered since the European elections.

8.3% is the the figure to beat from June and despite a vicious smear campaign by the Labour lap dogs I think we will be able to up our % quite comfortably. There will be no win but a good third place out of six, beating Labour, is my prediction.

As ever, time will tell.

The river Tay.

My absence from posting for a few days can be explained by the pictures above. Myself and Simon Darby travelled up to Perth in Scotland for a regional council meeting to discuss the Glasgow by-election and when there we were glad to take up the offer of some superb Salmon fishing on the great Scottish river Tay.
.
I am just about to sit down to my first meal from the beautiful 8lb salmon wrestled from that mighty river.

Copeland, Cumbria and the NW BNP MEP!!!!!

I have found a most interesting site where some serious political discourse of the recent election results can be found by scrolling down to comments in June 2009, the date is in the bottom right of the comment boxes and the posts of interest start with the County Council results by Chris Whiteside on 9th June, then all the comments below that:
Click on link below and scroll down about 80% of the page:

http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/guide/seat-profiles/copeland?cp=all

I found it very illuminating, I will reproduce some of the most interesting ones below:

"Cumbria (and Copeland in particular) was crucial to the successful election of Nick Griffin. In 2004 Cumbria was part of the reason they didn't win a seat and they polled about 2500 fewer votes than the Green party in the county, though they out polled them in the region. In 2009 though the Greens closed the gap in the region the BNP overtook them here and increased their numerical vote by more than 50% even on a lower turnout. If Cumbria had behaved like the rest of the region, the BNP would not have won a seat in the North West."

"Of the three parties which put up full county council slates in Copeland borough, the BNP retained the highest proportion of their county votes in the European elections. Which suggests that their vote may be more resilient than most of us would like to think."

The North West office of Nick Griffin MEP is open.

Its been a hard task but finally we are up and running. This is what the left feared above all else, the proffesionalisation of the British National Party. We are in a whole new era of politics now and I can tell you that we are handeling the new challenges very well indeed.

Tina and Martin Wingfield are over in Brussles at the moment with Nick and we intend to go over and support the MEP on a rota basis and I am looking forward to having a look over there in the near future. This whole process is giving us the experience we have so far lacked at the highest level and our people are performing well.

Straw joins debate alongside BNP.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw has agreed to take part in a debate alongside the British National Party on the BBC's Question Time programme.

Mr Straw told the BBC he would join a panel which will include BNP leader Nick Griffin, the Tories and Lib Dems, in London on 22 October.

He said the BNP were defeated when Labour "fought them hard".
Labour has previously refused to debate with the BNP, and some activists have branded the policy change "a disgrace".

The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats had already said they would take part in the programme.

Speaking on the Politics Show in the North West, Mr Straw said: "Wherever we have had BNP problems in my area and when we have fought them hard, we've pulled back and won the seats back.

"And that's what we have to do. We've got to make the argument for people and I am delighted to do so."

Policy reviewed
The BBC had already confirmed that it may invite Mr Griffin, who was elected as an MEP in June, to appear on a future edition of the Question Time, saying it was bound by the rules to treat all political parties with "due impartiality".

No BNP representatives have yet appeared on the BBC's flagship panel show.
But the corporation reviewed its position following the party's success in last June's European elections, in which Mr Griffin was one of two BNP candidates to be elected as an MEP.
I'm really pleased to hear that Jack has decided to go up against the BNP.

Margaret Hodge
A Labour spokesman said the party had reviewed its policy of refusing to share a platform with the BNP: "Following the BBC's decision to allow Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time, the Labour Party has agreed we should take on the disgusting politics of the BNP by participating in the programme."
He added that future programmes would be treated "on a case-by-case basis".

Minister Margaret Hodge, whose Barking and Dagenham constituency saw 11 council seats won by the BNP in 2006, told a Labour conference fringe meeting: "I'm really pleased to hear that Jack has decided to go up against the BNP.

"My constituents in Barking would not understand if we refused to engage in [a debate] with the BNP ....We need to have the confidence to be in that place."

She also said people turned to the BNP when they felt Labour was not listening to them and urged activists to "get off their backsides" and reclaim those votes.
'High wire act'

But Tony Kearns, assistant general secretary of the Communication Workers' Union, said it was a "disgrace" the BBC was going ahead with offering the BNP a Question Time seat.
He urged government ministers and MPs to join protests against the decision.

Jon Cruddas, Labour MP for Dagenham, who has led campaigns against the BNP, said it was difficult for Labour to know how to respond to sharing a platform with the anti-immigration party.

He told a fringe meeting at the Labour conference: "It's a high wire act. I don't know what the precise solution to this is.

"Over the years we've had a no-platform thing with the BNP but that offers diminishing returns now because they're in forms of electoral representation that they never were when we devised that policy."

He added: "You have to respect the office that they hold and that's the dilemma we now have."
He said: "We need to raise our game in confronting them because we've allowed them to eat into slices of the electorate in the last few years."

Day two.

Nick Griffin MEP, meeting his constituents in Penrith, Cumbria.
Nick conducting a media interview with Charlie Baillie the Glasgow North West parliamentary by-election candidate for the British National Party.

Nick and Charlie.

Nick Griffin MEP campaigning in Penrith with the BNP candidate for the Penrith West by-election, Alistair Barbour.
.
Wednesday Nick Griffin MEP, continued his tour of the North West. Most of the day was spent in Penrith meeting constituents and having a series of media interviews. We also captured a lot of film footage with Nick talking extensively to Alistair Barbour and Glasgow North East parliamentary candidate Charlie Baillie.
.
Again I was struck by just how much of a genuine celebrity Nick Griffin is now, he is literally a house hold name and I would say the most well known politician in the North West, certainly the only MEP anyone could name.
.
We then went onto the main business of the week: The opening of the North West constituency office. Everyone who contributed to the setting up of the office was invited as were many elected officials, BNP TV filmed the event and the video of the event will soon be up on the Internet.
.
After a reception and a a superb buffet prepared by Martin and Tina Wingfield, we settled down to work, going through current cases and setting up our procedures for running the vast constituency operation.
.
A very productive two days of intense activity, tiring but ultimately very exciting and we are all looking forward to the opportunity of proving conclusively that the British National Party are the only political party that truly represent the British people.

A day in the life of an MEP.

Liverpool
Knowsley

Rochdale

Workington.
.
The North West finally has a hard working, dedicated MEP and I had the great pleasure of accompanying him on a two day tour of his constituency. We started early visiting a high visibility information stall at a busy cross roads in Liverpool. What became clear from the start was just what a universally well known politician Nick Griffin is now, as soon as we got out of the car there was an endless stream of people approaching Nick and every other car was sounding their horns and waving.
.
We left the information stall and headed to Knowsley with the new organiser for the area, Tony Ward. Tony is standing in a by-election that is about to be called so we went into the ward for some campaign pictures and for Tony to show the MEP some areas of great concern, specifically a shopping complex in the centre of the community that is simply derelict.
.
The Chairman then visited the site of the most recent murder in Merseyside where Mr Griffin gave some extensive media interviews on the subject and before leaving Merseyside we went to the massive Ford car factory for more media interviews.
.
A packed day you would think but it was far from over as we then headed right over to Rochdale so that Nick could file a letter to the CPS on behalf of a constituent who had approached his MEP with a horrific case of sexual paedophile grooming against the constituents daughter by a Muslim gang. The case had been dropped by the CPS and even the police officers involved in the investigation were disgusted by this act of political cowards. It is fortunate that the family has an MEP who will not let this abuse go on ignored and this case and indeed the issue of grooming in the North West will not be swept under the carpet any longer!
.
Then followed a two and a half hour drive to Workington, Cumbria, where a full venue of members and supporters spent the remainder of the evening with their MEP, who gave a speech and then answered questions for a further hour. Having spent time campaigning with the Chairman on many occasions it came as no surprise to me when leaving the venue at 10.30pm he asked for a computer connected to the Internet so he could answer the days emails and do some work for that had to be finished for 9am the following morning.
.
The above is a typical work day for our Chairman and although I can manage a day or two of this punishing routine Nick Griffin MEP actually operates at this level most, if not all the time.

North West Regional Council.

This has been a long hard month so far with no end insight at the moment. Seven days a week is actually not enough even when you are putting in 18 hours on a Sunday and are back in the office for 9am Monday morning to start another week.
.
We have the Chairman in the NW this week as well and next Sunday I will find myself in another council meeting, the Advisory Council meeting fora very important national meeting of all regional organisers and the Chairman where we will be finalising the constitutional changes that will be put to the membership at this years AGM.
.
All very politically heavy going but it must be done. Anyhow as part of our expansion program in the NW we are combining rapid expansion with intensive training and the results are very good so far. Sunday, myself, Clive Jefferson, Alistair Barbour, regional secretary and Sue Mather, regional treasurer, held courses in: List management, canvass sheet preparation, mail merging electoral registers, leaflet design, risograph printing and book keeping.
.
I think it went OK and everyone learned some useful skills - especially the instructors as we are learning how to teach! Yes a very worthwhile day and a very good Regional Council meeting in the evening as well. Seven motions were reduced to two and I will publish the North Wests motions as soon as they are proofed and amended.
.
This period is radically different to the drama and adrenaline of recent elections but without this in depth political structure, learning and development, elections will not be won.

Go watch it on Sky TV love.......

always worth another viewing. What a classic that was. The Sun and the Mirrors top reporters also turned away, boy did I enjoy that, it is what you would call job satisfaction.

"Nikki"-the jaw-Sinclair.

A most amusing commentary by the Chairman this week on his web site, I just felt it was well worth repeating. Made me smile reading it. Nice smile on "Nikki" above.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then his colleague ‘Nikki’ Sinclair gives a good and brief speech. She or he reads it confidently enough, but insists on chewing gum, which draws attention to her or his unavoidably still masculine jaw line.
.
Very strange. Perhaps pointedly she is not applauded by her colleagues, even though they did applaud John Bufton. She speaks several times on behalf of UKIP, giving further credence to the rumour that Nigel Farage has anointed her as his chosen (because eminently controllable) successor.
.
Next episode of the soap opera coming soon no doubt!
.
Keep up to date on the happenings over the channel on our MEPs web site:

Glasgow North East, by-election.

.
Some how, for my sins, I have been asked to oversee the Glasgow North East, Parliamentary by-election: No easy task, these constituency's are huge. 75,000 + electors, usually made up of a full council district.
.
I do know whats involved in such an effort as I was part of the management team running the Sedgefield by-election where we polled the best ever vote in a parliamentary by election in our history. A very solid 10% (just under actually) or so in the safest Labour seat in the country, in a constituency where we had not contested any elections seriously before.
.
The effort expended was absolutely huge and until you have a proper go at one of these beasts you really can not comprehend what is involved. Great experience, good result and a steep learning curve. I think our Scottish colleagues will rise to the occasion, we expect the election to be some time in November.

Penrith.

Penrith BNP held a superb day of action in the town centre on Saturday, Local Organiser Kevin Clark and local members Ian Holt and Dee Lockhart gave out hundreds of leaflets and sold many copies of the last two Issues of VoF, it was a fantastic response with many people stopping by for a chat.

Eden District has sustained and increased its BNP work rate since the Euro elections and as with other areas in Cumbria solid grass roots street activism is now the normal practice for the Penrith unit.

Trouble in Copeland council.

Councillor quits over whip row

COPELAND Council has been thrown into disarray after a prominent Labour councillor washed his hands of party politics saying: “I have been subjected to intimidation.”

Dixon yesterday quit as a Labour councillor and called for the government officer for the North West to investigate “the corporate governance of Copeland Council”.

He quit the ruling Labour group after refusing to back down on a recommendation by a committee he chairs favouring future cross-party control of the council.

Mr Dixon went ahead with his recommendation to Tuesday’s stormy full council meeting despite the Labour group putting “the whip” on him not to do so.

His committee had recommended that “work needs to be done on ensuring the governance of the council is cross-party and this should include re-examination of the council’s standing orders and constitution to ensure that this happens”.

The proposal was rejected by the council but will form part of discussions among councillors, who have to decide later this month on whether to bring in government teams as part of the “Choosing to Change” programme.

Mr Dixon chairs the overview and scrutiny management committee which last week held an investigation into the pros and cons of Choosing to Change. He had called the inquiry as a result of a story in The Whitehaven News.

Things came to a head at this week’s council meeting when Mr Dixon refused to accept the Labour whip and expressed serious concern that “lines” had been deleted from a separate report from his committee.

An independent inquiry has now been set up. Passages taken out of the report concerned the Place Survey in which Copeland Council was seen to be third worst in England for giving public satisfaction. Legal officer Martin Jepson said the council’s corporate team made recommendations for certain items to be deleted but because of “a breakdown in communications” Coun Dixon had not been informed.

Former mayor Keith Hitchen said: “I support an inquiry about how changes were made in a report going to full council. It can’t be condoned.”

After the council meeting Mr Dixon told The Whitehaven News he was standing down as Labour councillor and instead would represent Distington, Parton and Lowca as an independent.

He said: “I am proud of what I have done. I will not stand for political intimidation.” He told the full council he had been intimidated at the previous night’s meeting of the Labour Group.

He claimed also that three officers had been criticised at the group meeting and this he was not prepared to tolerate either.

He told The Whitehaven News: “It is party political interference creating the current problems in Copeland council.”

As Mr Dixon distanced himself from his Labour colleagues at the council meeting, deputy leader George Clements said: “We are quite happy with all but one of the recommendations.”

Later, when he was given the last word to move his recommendations, Mr Dixon said: “Our recommendations are based on factual information and evidence from the investigation we held but I was lambasted at the Labour group meeting...

“People are crying out for change, they are paying their money for the council to provide services.”

Mr Dixon wound up by declaring: “You are being led by lemons.”

His motion for all the committee recommendations to be accepted was defeated.

Three meetings were being held shortly for councillors to decide on whether to go ahead with the Choosing to Change programme. Coun Clements said the cross-party recommendation could be discussed at these meetings. “We wanted it withdrawn now, have it clarified at these meetings and come up with better wording.”

For the Conservatives, Yvonne Clarkson said: “Clearly, there is no willingness to change. The overview and scrutiny management committee itself is cross party, we all agreed with the recommendations put today and Brian Dixon conducted it with absolute integrity. Now we hear of officers changing a report.”

Tory leader David Moore said: “What I am listening to here is absolutely appalling. This is a good report, it is refreshing. This is a good opportunity for a new start but they (Labour) have fallen at the first hurdle.”

Council leader Elaine Woodburn said the disputed recommendation was weak “because it does not clarify exactly what’s meant... it is not to say we don’t want cross party working.

“Choosing to Change hasn’t started yet but if there is found to be a need for a cross party group to look at change and the direction of the council then you have my personal assurance we will sit down and look at it.”

And Tim Knowles said: “We are the are third least affected by recession, a lot of good things have been done, let’s get on with the job and let’s get better.”

BNP gets a slot on BBC's Question Time.

We have been seeing early signs that things have changed since the Euro breakthrough and today we witness another, and far more dramatic breakthrough: Click on the links below and enjoy.....
.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6823364.ece
.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/sep/06/bbc-labour-bnp-question-time
.
To highlight the magnitude of this I have selected a few of the more important implications of this development:
.
"Labour aides said that no minister would be forced to debate with him, but admitted the party would have to reconsider the long-standing convention that senior Labour politicians do not debate head to head with the BNP."
.
"The Tories, meanwhile, said they would be "very happy" to field a senior member of the shadow cabinet to confront Griffin, whose invitation follows his election to the European parliament in the spring."
.
A Labour spokesman said: "The custom is that Labour does not share a platform with the BNP, but given the impact of the BBC's guidelines on our and other mainstream political parties' position we are reviewing this."
.
A BBC spokeswoman said: "The BBC is obliged to treat all political parties registered with the Electoral Commission and operating within the law with due impartiality.
.
"By winning representation in the European parliament, the BNP has demonstrated evidence of electoral support at a national level. This will be reflected in the amount of coverage it receives on BBC programmes such as Question Time."
--------------------------------------------------
Before the European Elections there were some questioning the wisdom of even contesting the elections. They were wrong then, they are doubly wrong now as the benefits of taking parliamentary seats starts to become clear.
